DT Issue1 Week1 - Open-Air Reading

Postby Sara Stanton » Sat Jun 13, 2009 5:21 pm

Taking advantage of the somewhat decent weather during lunch-break Sara sits on one of the benches in the Quad, reading through the organic chemistry book on her knees. Every once in a while she takes a bite from the sandwich she's holding.

Looking up from her book Sara spots the hard-to-miss rainbow hair of Ayami and, remembering her conversation with Bear the other night, decides to see how the girl is doing.
"Hey, Ayami, right? Bear's friend?" she adresses the girl, getting up to walk up to her.

"Hrm? Yes, that is me," Ayami looked up a little startled.

"Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. I just figured I'd see how you're doing. Bear sounded a little worried about you the other night." She smiles softly at the girl.

"Kind of. I was with John when we rescued you from those vamps. You were pretty out of it though and I propably looked a bit different then. I'm Sara."

"Oh! Of course!" Ayami took a step back and took a deep bow. "Thank you so much for coming to my aid during such a difficult time."

Sara looks a little confused at the bow, but writes it off as a cultural thing. "No need to thank me. Helping people out is what the teams are all about, right? You doing okay then?" Ayami's likely to pick up the honest worry Sara's giving off, although it propably isn't nearly as strong as what would be coming from Bear or John.

"Oh, but if it wasn't for you, I would have been one of them. You likely saved my life; and, for that, I thank you.

As for me, I'm....getting better."

"That's good to hear. You've had some really bad luck your first few weeks here, hmm?" She's about to place her hand to Ayami's shoulder reaffirmingly but stops herself in time, figuring she might not exactly be comfortable with 'strangers' touching her after what happened.

"I think it goes a bit beyond 'bad-luck', to be frank," she said, with a frown. "But most people have been so nice to me ever since then..."

She winces and closes her eyes for a brief moment.

"You're right, sorry, I didn't mean to belittle it or anything. But it's all over now. The vampires are stomped out..." for the most part anyway "...and that monster's safely locked up, right?" she smiles, trying to be optimistic as she notices Ayami's wincing.

"..."

She's silent for a moment.

"...I hope so. I really hope so. But she can be in so many places..."

She shudders for a moment.

"...I just am trying not to think about it."

Sara nods. "I shouldn't have brought it up. Seeing Bear brooding over your psychology books just made me worry a little. I don't know her that well but she always seemed like it'd take alot to bring her down like that. If there's anything I can do to help..."

Ayami smiled. "I was going to say something similar. If there's anything I can do to repay your assistance, please, let me know. I hate to be in someone's debt.

Yes...Bear and John have been so wonderfully wonderful to me. It's so nice to have someone like that you cry your eyes out on; who you can count on to keep you safe."

"Still," Ayami said, taking Sara's hand. "If there's anything, anything at all you need, please do not hestitate to let me know. I do owe you a debt of gratitude."

"Yes, I think I would have collapsed without those two--they keep me safe and they keep me sane. I know, no matter how bad it gets, that I can run to them--it's a fantastic feeling."

"It is, isn't it?" she smiles, feeling a tiny bit confused about Ayami talking about two people like that among the much stronger feelings that crop up from thinking about Will. "It's important to have someone like that."

"Uhm... yeah... kind of. Although the Willow phase was kind of an accident. Usually he's a guy. Of course that doesn't change the fact that we'd do anything to keep each other safe."

"So she is a guy then? Hrm. Well, I suppose Bear was right, then.

And s...er...he's lucky to have you. She seemed so fragile, so uncertain...he must feel so much safer, with someone from the X-teams to watch over him and keep him safe. Like me and John, in a way."

"Well, I only met him the one time, but it's what he was broadcasting. She seemed very nervous and self-concious, like he could have been blown over by a stiff breeze--he seemed scared when Bear and I came into the showers.

And a little bit clumsy, too--she fell down when we were in there. Is he really on the teams?"

She paused for a second.

"Not that I'm saying he can't! Lots of people get more confident when they have something to do!"

"Oh! That was... in the showers when... yeah..." Just thinking about walking in on that scene is enough to make Sara 'broadcast' enough embarassment to be easily picked up. "No wonder he felt that way. That must have been awfully uncomfortable. He usually isn't like that."

"Maybe. I don't know why he would be that way though--it's perfectly natural," Ayami shrugged. "If you say that he's not that way, though, I suppose I'll believe you--you surely have spent more time with him than I have. He just felt that way both times I ran into him--hesitant. Maybe it was the scene, but...well, who can tell, really.

And you don't need to be so embarassed, either," Ayami smiles. "She's cute--you're lucky. Both ways, actually. And you don't have to worry--he didn't seem interested in either of us, or with anyone the other day we were in the shower together. Though he did run off pretty fast after you stepped in..."

"Oh I wasn't worried about that. I know he'd never do something like that, even if it's apparently old-fashioned to not have orgies in the showers." She glances over at Ayami, realizing she'll propably pick up on how she thinks about the scene she accidently witnessed. "I... uhm... no offense."

Ayami closes her eyes and cringes again, shaking her head.

She takes a deep breath and opens her eyes. "It's actually very, very hard for me to avoid joining in things like that. With everyone in the room putting out waves of desire...if Bear didn't help pull me out, I would have been in there all day, I think.

Not that they're all bad, of course," she smiled slyly. "You never know--you might enjoy sharing with a friend."

"Oh... oh! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound like that. If you're enjoying yourself who am I to judge, right? It's just not something I really understand the appeal of, you know? Will is the only one I want to enjoy those things with and I don't think I could not get jealous in such a situation."

"No, it's OK. I do believe that doing what makes you feel good is the most important thing in life--I wish, just for a moment, I could spread Bear's happiness around the school--it's the purest, sweetest type I think I've ever tasted. But, uh, yeah--I try to ignore people who say 'you should do this, it makes you that'--because if it pleases you, who are they to butt in?"

Ayami smiled. "And if Willow is enough for you and you for him, then that's great. But I'd say, as to the jealousy? It would make more sense if someone invited ONE of you and not the other," she giggled.

"Well you propably could, right? Like a broadcasting tower for her 'signal'? I guess there are people who wouldn't appreciate having their head messed with... But the campus in general sure could use more of Bear's happiness after all that's happened."

She shook her head. "My range isn't nearly that far...I'd have to have everyone come in individually," she smiled.

"Plus, the idea of having a couple thousand people attatched to my head...I don't know how anyone could stay sane if they did that. Sometimes, listening in to one mind is hard enough..."

"Kinda. But, it's not quite how it works."

Ayami pauses for a second.

"Everyones emotions are different. Your embarassment is of a different...texture than Will's, for instance. So, if I were to project 'embarassment' at each of you, you'd each feel a slightly different version of the same emotion. But I can also sort of 'link' minds together for a bit. If I were, again, to do that with you and Will, I could have you both feel, for instance, Will's happiness, which will be a bit different than yours.

It's kinda hard to explain to a non-empath."

"I... I know." Normally she'd be hesitant to talk about it, but she realises if anyone can relate to what happened it'd be the little rainbow-haired girl.
"It happened to Will and me on accident. It was a bit scary seeing his every thought, but at the same time it was one of the most wonderful things I've ever experienced."

"Oh, it did? Then maybe you DO have some idea. I don't know about thoughts, but...

The endless refraction of emotions. The very fact that everything you do that makes HIM happier makes YOU happier, the passion and pleasure building..."

"When you're with someone you trust, there's not a better feeling in the world.

Unfortunatley for me, I'm kind of like that with everyone. All the time."
