The magic doorway

The Estate's meticulously kept gardens, including a hedgemaze that students have occasionally described as "sadistic" and a sizeable rose garden. Benches in shaded spots are plentiful, and the gardens are popular to study in on pleasant days.

The magic doorway

Postby Paul Valmont » Fri Dec 05, 2014 11:50 pm

Paul had come across this tree when he was jumping around the grounds. Actually, he'd come into it, but... details, details.

But anyway, scrapes and bruises aside, it had grown a bit too close to the tree next to it, and they had two thick branches that were crossed over each other, just over Paul's head. That might not have really made any impression on anyone else, but to Paul, it was a place to practice without being indoors where everyone could watch. So right now, it was acting as a doorway. Currently, that doorway seemed to be open onto a desert, with much warmer air blowing out into the England cold. Hm. What next.

After the nasty spill earlier, Elise was walking through the garden with Wiggles at her side, nipping at her. Frankie was apparently sulking somewhere else for whatever reason.

But are you sure you're okay? Shouldn't you take a trip to get cleaned up a bit?
I'm fineeeeee. Don't worry so much!
But...butbutbut...What i- OHMYGOSHTHERE'SPAULIHAVENTSEENHIMINFOREVERANDHESTHEBESTHEISSOGREATANDHEDREWMEPERFECTLYAND

Wiggles continues on like that as she runs towards Paul, weaving in and out of his legs. Elise facepalms.

"What the- AH!" Paul stumbled back from the wild animal that was apparently attacking him. "Yaaaah!" And, naturally, as these things worked, he stumbled through the portal, which promptly closed.

Elise ran to where to portal once was. "AH! Paul! Oh shit. Oh shitty shit. Can he come back? What if he's stuck forever?"

I didn't mean to scare him! I just was so excited to see him! He'll come back. Don't worry! I'm sure of it!

While Wiggles was being happily optimistic, Elise was looking worriedly at the tree. "Oh mannnnn..."

It was a couple minutes later before the portal opened again, and Paul peeked through. "Oh, shit, did it get you!?" he asked, seeing Elise looking all beat up and hurting over.

"Paul! Wait, what? Did what get me?" She seemed confused. Wiggles bolted back over to Paul.

He's back! See, I told you he'd be back!

Wiggles didn't relent.

Elise was giggling hard. "P-paul..." She held her sides from laughter. "Paul it's Wiggles."

"That... Oh. He... Doesn't bite too, does he?" He asked, remembering the headbutt. "What happened to you, then?" He added, a glad she hadn't been savaged by a wild animal like he'd thought.

"Wiggles is really nice. She cuddles with me when I sleep!" As if in answer, Wiggles runs back over to Elise and hops up into her arms. "Dawwww...Oh! I uh...I was trying to practice flying really fast and I kinda crashed into someone. No big deal, really. I should pay attention more. It's hard to concentrate with Wiggles and Frankie always talking though."

"Oh yeah, definitely." She lied with a nod. "I'm not worried about it."

I am! You should get it cleaned up!
It'll be fine!

"So what were you up to? Practicing again?" She asks, trying to change the subject.

Paul frowned, but the distraction sadly worked. "yeah. I'm... uh... trying to find places," he admitted. "I think I can go anywhere in the world. I just... um... don't know how to get most places."

"Everywhere," he said with a grin. Then his face got serious again. "Only way to figure it out is process of elimination, though. I mean..." He frowned, then opened a new portal. This time, all that could be seen was water. "That's what I get most of the time. I mean... I can tell that this is..." he screwed up his face in thought. "It's the Atlantic, closer to Europe than America. Northern hemisphere, but... Eh. It's just ocean. Not really worth pinning down farther than that." He closed the portal.

"Well sure it is. I mean, like, each place you pinpoint down is another area exposed on a map, right? This may sound silly, but think of it like a video game. When you discover new parts of the map, those areas are unlocked and you can, like, go back to them with ease. Soooo if you pinpoint these areas over time, even the ocean, shouldn't pinpointing other places be easier too?"

"Kind of," he said. "But it's slow. I can't go too far, because... well..." He looked around. "Okay. Chicago? It's that way." He pointed at a point near her feet. "Way off, but that way. New York is that way, Texas is that way. I don't have any straight lines to work with. So if I guess wrong at a place too far off? I end up with dirt falling through the portal. Or worse, maybe."

"That's why I don't go trying to poke some place in Japan or some crazy place I've never been to or opened anything near. What if I miss and open it, I don't know, in space?" He shrugged. "So that's why I can't go many places yet. I think I can manage places close to here in Europe. I mean..." He threw up his hand and the door opened again, this time showing a countryside. "That's got to be in France somewhere. Just... not sure where. And walking around in France is supposed to be a bad idea." He closed it again.

"It'll happen one day." She says with a nod.

It really will! And Paul will be awesome and famous and amazing and Again, Wiggles goes off on a ramble of positive thinking, jumping out of Elise's arms and trotting over to Paul excitedly.

"Um...Wiggles agrees." Elise elaborates.

"Besides Japan? I dunno. I mean I kinda get sick of the big cities anyway. Growing up in New York kinda ruined that, ya know? Probably just some really pretty nature place. Like a preserve or something. Could get a lot of inspiration for paintings there. Nothin special!"

"Hm. Okayyyyy... in that case, let's see. We could go to..." He thought, then threw his hand out, the door opening now in a forest at the top of a waterfall. Specifically, on the shore at the side of the river going over it, before anyone gets any ideas. "Something like that?"

You LOVE pretty stuff! Waterfalls, meadows, ponds, butterflies...that's why you got the wings!

"It's for art." She says with a nod. "Like...this is the perfect setting to paint. Especially with the way the light is reflecting off the water!" Wiggles runs past her and splashes in some of the water at the shoreline.

There's fish too! Salmon!

"Ohhh! Neat! Are they big?" She asks to what would sound like no one as she went over to Wiggles, looking into the water.
