I12 - Smelling The Roses

The Estate's meticulously kept gardens, including a hedgemaze that students have occasionally described as "sadistic" and a sizeable rose garden. Benches in shaded spots are plentiful, and the gardens are popular to study in on pleasant days.

"The way I've heard it explained is that a human mind sort of tables some things during the day, things you don't have time to really think about, worries you can't deal with just yet."

"Then when you sleep, your mind tries to piece them together and make sense of things."

"I've had situations in which I did not know the answer or I drew the wrong conclusion based on what I knew. But this feels different. I have the choice to pick the wrong one based on nothing." Oddly enough she sounds excited about that.

"But again, people judge you based on your decisions."

"Like here's an example. Say someone wanted to run a process on your network, and you gave them permission to. That process turns out to be not much good. It's inefficient, eats up too much system resources, and is returning inaccurate results. So you look at the code, and you see that this person took some shortcuts, their methodology wasn't good, or they were operating off of wrong assumptions when they wrote it."

"Now the first time you might figure that this person will get better, and you allow them to run more processes later, after telling them what was wrong with their first effort."

"Would you feel the same way if they kept doing it even after you told them about the mistakes? How many chances would you give them to get it right?"

"Those are way too few variables to determine it. How important is the process, how much time has passed, is it the exact same mistake. But if it was an exact repeat in a trivial process then one attempt to show improvement. If the process is crucial enough I would correct it myself."

"Someone can tell you something that is true, but that doesn't mean you should trust them on everything. They could tell you something that is incomplete, and they could tell you because they want to upset you or steer you somewhere."

"Like this guy you met? Well, he didn't tell you anything that was incorrect necessarily. However, if he's that guy, we know he wants to take the Lighthouse, and if he knows who you are then he knows that normally you are the Lighthouse in a way."

"So it's a little suspicious if it's really him, and he's trying to cozy up to you, yeah?"

"Yeah. That's why you can't always just do what you like. I mean you can, but then you have to live with having hurt someone, or having let someone down. That's the consequences. You control what you do, so when you choose to do something, that reflects on you."

"It gets easier as you get more experienced. One of the things a human mind is good at is recognizing patterns. Eventually you know who you already trust, you look at how they act, you look at who they trust and who they'll vouch for. You're not in it alone, and if someone starts acting in ways that people who've hurt you before did, you're within your rights to take a step back on doing things with them. Sometimes you're wrong about a person and you get hurt. Sometimes that's what it takes to learn that. It's not a good feeling, I can tell you."
