The specter sent by Regan worked--Haley fell back on her ass and tried to get away, terrified, before it was all dissipated by Nailah's light. She hugged her knees to her chest, tears in her eyes again as Nailah lectured.

Aisha had sat motionless while Nailah was there, happy for once that no one could see her. Once Nailah left, she started eating her dinner, feeling sad and annoyed and disappointed with her friends.

Haley, almost tucked away under the edge of the table, finally picked herself up and wiped away her tears. It was like Regan picked one of her biggest fears right out of her brain when the shadow came for her. She didn't bother to grab her food, she just picked up her backpack and walked quickly away.
