"Don't!" she interrupts her, catching herself and going on a bit more softly. "Don't do this. Don't try to find the one thing you could have done differently."
"For what I did? I deserve everything that happened..." she says, actually stepping into the room and closing the door behind her, leaning against it with her hands behind her back.
"Hers... isn't the only blood on my hands. When I saw Legion and the others make their demands my first thought was that I had to get rid of them because the teams would only arrest them..."
"Don't do this to yourself..." she almost pleads. This all felt much too familiar and she almost wishes Sam would just be angry at her. At least that she could handle.
"I lied to you. I led you on a pointless chase and then tried to convince you to give up only because I couldn't bear telling you the truth. I... slept with Harbinger."
She doesn't resist the embrace but she doesn't reciprocate either. She lets it go on long enough to fight back the tears so Sam won't notice when she eventually frees herself from the hug.
"I... I can't do this." She wants to take a step back but quickly realizes she stopped right in front of the door to start with. "I'm only going to disappoint and hurt you. Again."
"I wish I could. I just want to see you smile again." she says, reaching out for Sam's shoulder before stopping herself. "But you deserve better. Someone who won't be a painful reminder of what you lost..."
