Jess did her best to ignore it, fighting back the residual urge to go for the throat every time someone mentioned Nina.

Reaching the bar she got her own beer, she took a drink, half hoping someone had the guts to say something to her face.

Juma still hasn't seen the footage in person, and his major concern was that a fight would break out. When it seems to not be an issue he relaxes again and lets his attention return to the people he sits with.

Most of the guy's seem to be cowards, content at whispering and pointing at Jessica and Nina. Although one drunk in the back shouts out some pretty rude suggestions for the two.

"Excellent suggestion. You should heed your own advice, or at least look at what happened rationally. Having a good memory is not a crime. Being the victim of an attack on that memory is not a crime. There is someone out there who has committed a serious crime, and attacking Calvin for the actions of a stranger is not going to heal the damage done."

"Now, in the meantime, is there a back door out of this place? Because I have to go take care of something in the bathroom, and then I'm getting the hell out of here before she decides I'm tastier than getting a burger with her beer."

Steeling himself, Cal set down his beer and turned to her. "For whatever it's worth," he said, watching her warily, "I'm sorry. I didn't think anyone could get in my head to do that... hell, I still don't know how they did do it, but that's beside the point."

Calvin was taking measured breaths now, trying not to yell. "I... don't... have.. a choice," he said. "I don't have anything left in my head that can process anything visual that isn't digital. That's how every single thing that I see is stored. And if I remember it, it gets pulled up again in a video file. I don't have a choice."

"All right, crash course. All of my visual centers in my brain are gone. Fried. Replace. Everything I see is recorded digitally, which means it's stored digitally, which means that while my brain can store it, it can't translate it. So if there's something I remember, I either remember it without any visual signal, or my AI pulls it up in a file and keeps it in the cache for a day, possibly more if it's something it needs to pull up more than just once. So when my head got hacked..." He trailed off, thinking about what had happened. "Fuck. FUCK, I know how they did it. When I get hacked, my brain shuts down, dumps everything into my computer, reformats my memory, and pulls it all back up, just to make sure nothing gets infected. It only takes a couple minutes... shit, they must have hacked it off my computer while I was formatting. Everything I'd seen or thought about since I woke up would've been in there. SHIT. And all they'd need was an extra computer, after I fried the first one. God DAMN it."

I hear about something, I run a search on it. Half the time I forget about it until I have to look at what's running to cancel things or I get told that the search is done. And... well, once you see something, you can't really un-see it." He looked back up at Nina. "And now that you're here, too, I'm sorry to you, too."

He shrugged. "Bad habit," he admitted. "Plus, if I start to wonder something, my AI pops up and asks if I want it to run a search. At first I just did it because I was surprised that I could even do that. Then I just did it... well, out of habit."
