The saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound

The night after settling things as well as she could, Brigid falls into fitful sleep, occasionally murmuring softly.

In her dream, she wanders in a forest full of trees scarred by lightning strikes. Her clothes are torn, and as she passes behind trees, her form seems to switch between the human girl and her monstrous frame, alternating.

In the woods, Murphy was sitting under a tree. She appeared to be sleeping.

Brigid relaxes a bit once she catches a familiar sight. She walks over towards Murphy, and goes to sit down nearby.

A loud growl shakes the forest for a brief moment and Brigid can feel the hungry presence of the creature Murphy became that first night in the woods for a brief moment. It fades away almost immediately though, as Murphy opens her eyes.

"Brigid?" Murphy asks.

Brigid tenses as she looks around for where the noise came from. Then she feels a bit bolstered as Murphy stirs.

"Heya, Murphy." She smiles.

"What are you doing here?" Murphy asks, Unlike Brigid, Murphy didn't seem to be alternating. She was both things at once. If you looked at her one way she was a girl. Another way she was a wolf. It was all perspective.

"What do you mean? Shouldn't I be here?"

"The woods?" Brigid shrugs. It makes sense to her, at least.

Murphy nods. She traces her fingers along the lightning scar of a tree.

"Weird."

"The storm really tore through here. They'll take awhile to heal."

"It's sad," Murphy says. "The forest is almost gone."

"Where will we go?"

"I don't know," she says. "This was where I felt safe."

"I don't... I don't think we're alone out here, though. It sounded like something's out here with us."

"I don't know if it's a 'who' per se. It did seem... familiar, though."

Murphy frowns.

"Should get moving."

Brigid nods and stands, offering Murphy a hand up.

Murphy gets to her feet with Brigid's help. She stretches.

As Murphy gets up a rustling sound surrounds them.

Brigid tenses again, backing up against the tree as her eyes dart around.

"You hear that, right?"

The rustling sound grows louder. Closer.

Murphy growls.

"Got your back," Brigid says, her dream-self snapping into razor-clarity in her monstrous form as she backs up to Murphy, teeth bared.

The rustling becomes a mighty wind and as it dies a crowd of women wearing hooded robes surround the two. They make no movement. They seem to be evaluating the two girls.

"Sacrifices," One voice says. For some reason it's impossible to tell which one it comes from.

They smell like dead things. Walking corpses.

Specifically, they smell like dead wolves.

"Leave," Murphy growls.

"Nobody's getting sacrificed. She's bound!"

The women draw back their hoods in unison and reveal a gleaming silver band around the neck of each of the "sacrifices".

"Bound," the voice repeats. There's a bitter tone.

There's a fear in Murphy's eyes but she doesn't shrink away. "What about my pack?"

Murphy glances at Brigid. She nods and takes a breath.

"Not leaving," Murphy agrees firmly.

"The hunters are not interested in wild wolves," the voice says. "They want warriors."

They look at Brigid. "Sisters bound by blood and battle."

"Then the hunters don't know what they're in for," she says, more sure of it than she really has any right to be.

There's no answer. The wind blows again and the women are gone.

Dreams are weird.

"Thanks," Murphy says to Brigid.
