After classes, Miranda had decided to spend some time in the library. Not having anything specific to look for, she'd talked the librarian into letting her take the full book cart and reshelve books to pass the time. So now she was pushing the cart up and down the aisles, replacing books in their proper places.

Veronica was on her weekly trip to the library. This time, her target seemed to be fiction section for some light reading. Her brain was on textbook overload, and she needed a nice getaway. As she turned the corner, she noticed Miranda and walked up with a smile. "I belief I haf seen you before around campus, non? Zee orientation, I sink."

She laughs. "You caught me. Eet is painfully obvious, unfortunately. Nice was my hometown. And yourself?"

"Um... nowhere really. I guess Maldon is as close to a hometown as I have."

She is a bit confused about Miranda's answer, but doesn't press into it. "So you volunteer your time at zee library here?"

"Well, I really didn't have anything else to do this afternoon and its a penance of sorts. I'm attending the Institute as well."

"Penance? I do not see how spending time in a quiet and relaxing environment could be considered a place for penance, but zat is just me."

"It is nice and quiet, but I'm also just shelving books," she pointed out. "So there's work involved."

"If you want. I'm not one to turn down help." She pulled another book off the stack and looked for its place on the shelf. Then she reached behind her and pushed a book that had been about to fall back onto the shelf.

She smiles to herself and begins to help put away some of the books. "I am sure you haf been asked zis before, so I apologize if eet is a repeat, but you are able to see?"

"Yes, clairvoyance, which is good since my eyes apparently didn't work," she said. "Most likely a combination of my Mom's powers with my Mum's powers."

"Not rude at all. Eet is called psychometry. It also extends to people as well, unfortunately."

Veronica pauses, thinking about it. "More difficult zen many would realize. Mais, as you stated, you haf to take zee good wis zee bad."

"Wis items, it is a simple matter off concentrating on it. Feeling zee energies zat surround eet and zee residual auras zat haf manifested into strong memories. Wis people, eet is always on as far as I am aware. Zere is no way for me to know as off yet if a simple hug will cause an intrusion on memory, or how to focus eet. As off right now, eet is uncontrollable and always on."

"Ouch. That stinks. Just a warning then, probably not wise to touch me. Some of my memories are... painful."

"To be fair, eet is only through skin contact, but zat can happen easily. Accidental brushes and zee like. Eet's happened before. And...I am sorry you haf had to go through such painful memories. I promise you I would never intrude on such unless you deemed eet necessary. I do not like zee idea off seeing sings zey would raser keep to zemselves."

"Oh, I didn't think you would intentionally intrude. I just wanted to warn you to be careful. I'd hate to have someone inadvertently hit one of my memories."

She smiles softly. "I will be careful. Sank you for zee warning. Again, eet is a shame you haf had to go through such sings."

"Thank you. We don't get to choose where we come from. And I'm learning and relearning that it's what with do with the now that matters."

She shakes her head. "Relearning is part off zee process. Once you get eet right, zen you are able to move on to more sings. Zee fact you haf recognized you must relearn eet is wise in eetself."

Miranda decided to just take the compliment. No sense in cementing her insanity. "So what sort of things have you learned with your ability?"

"Lots off history. Some good, some bad. I haf seen some off zee most beautiful sings, and some off zee most dreadful. A seashell on zee shore can show the beauty of an engagement between two lovers, and zee walls off zee Catacombs in Paris can be...much less appealing."

"I would imagine the Astral around the catacombs is unpleasant."

Veronica tilts her head. Apparently she doesn't know much about that, and it likely shows. Considering how sheltered she was, it makes sense. "Astral?"

"Sorry, I forget that I have a leg up on this stuff with my Mum. The Astral. It's kind of like an 'otherspace' and all minds are sort of connected to it on some level, telepaths more than others. It tends to carry hopes, dreams, has its own entities and in some cases it sort of takes on the cast of an area it's 'near'. So I would imagine the catacombs has some nasty entities and influences hanging around it."

Veronica listens closely, genuinely interested in it all. After Miranda explains, she nods. "Indeed, eet sounds like zee catacombs would be a horrible place indeed. I remember seeing zee result off some off zee missing children reported for many years."

"Good and bad leave stains on it, so there are good places too. The Astral here is kind of a mixed bag and can be hard to navigate since there's so much going on here."
