Issue 1 Downtime

There was the usual knock at the door, as Stan arrived for his relatively regular check-up on his children.

"Hey Dad." Christie said, opening the door "Tommy's at the library, come on in." he might, possibly, notice that she'd been crying.

He did indeed notice the crying, as he entered the room with a smile.

"We'll, the dorm room hasn't turned into a disaster area, yet. That's good." He said, jokingly.

"Yeah, we're trying to keep it habitable." Christie said, trying to joke back, she added "Also, I told Tommy if it started smelling like boy-funk, I'd throw him out the window."

"I'll talk with him, and make sure he stays clean."

he took a seat next to her, hand on her shoulder.

"How are you doing? You're not your usual, happy self.."

"Its nothing...I was just being dumb." Christie said, and knowing her dad wouldn't accept that said "There was this girl I liked, and....things were going ok, and then she decided that she didn't want to go out with me."

Stan nodded slowly in understanding, and continued listening.

"Thats about it." Christie said with a shrug "I finally met a girl I liked, who liked girls, who I thought liked me......and then nothing. I'm going to die old and alone."

Stan nodded, and pulled her in for a hug, rubbing her back in a fatherly way.

"I'm sorry, Christy.. Things won't always be like that.. you'll find someone."

"How?" Christie said, starting to cry "How is it going to be ok?"

"It will fade with time.. Trust me on this. You'll pick yourself up, and move on. I know it feels terrible right now.. Just let it out."

He continued the hug, like any good parent would.

Christie cried for a long time, but finally the tears subsided "God, you must think I'm a total wuss."

"Awww, thanks Dad." Christie said "It just doesn't seem fair, y'know?"

"I remember when I used to get you ice cream when bad things happened, when you were younger.."

Stan smiled, patting her shoulder and getting up.

"Off to the ice cream parlour in Malden, then?"

Stan smiled, glad to be able to pamper his daughter one small way again.

He held the door open.

"How have you been?" Christie asked "Any exciting Science."

"Oh, just dealing with the fallout from the as guardian attack and mind switch.. The history of the lighthouse and the Braddock estate have quite an interesting history. I think you might like it."

He turned, closing the door.

"I've kept some of the mutant studies projects going on the back burner, though."

Stan turned, a little surprised.

"I thought you were pretty busy with athletics, the x-men training program.."

"Yeah, I am." Christie said "But the way things I going, I figure I need a back up plan in case 'be a superhero' isn't happening. Plus...I'd like to spend more time with you."

"We'll, I suppose I could use some help occasionally.. I'll see when I can squeeze you into the lab schedule."

He gave her a quick side hug, as they headed outside.

Stan noticed Christie's sadness, having seen it many times before.

He sighed as they headed out into the sun, and rubbed her shoulder in sympathy.

"I hope so." Christie said "I think thats part of why Regan bugs me so much. I mean, yeah, Mom is in a better place, but if anyone was going to come back...."

Stan nodded, sadly.

"I would give almost anything to see your mother again.. But having her go through what Regan has apparently gone through.. There is a reason why passing is a one way street. Mostly."
