Issue 1 Downtime

It was some time after classes that Haley's phone, probably right after sending a text, just went blank. No warning, no response, it just... stopped.

Except that every few seconds a ripple of color would spread across the screen, accompanied by a 'ping!'

"...the hell?" She said aloud, wearily.

There was no answer. Just the rhythmic 'ping' every few seconds.

At this, Haley started to tear up. She'd barely been sleeping for days, and the ONE fucking thing that kept her sane, connected to the one friend she still seemed to have at home AND her boyfriend who could text from his brain.

"No, no, no! God damnit it's not fair," she cried.

The pinging stopped for a moment when she started tearing up. Then it started again, a dot pinging on one edge of the screen. It probably wouldn't take Haley long to figure out that it was on the edge that faced her door regardless of how she turned it.

Haley sniffled, looking at the phone suspiciously. She rose, wiped her eyes, and started moving towards the door, phone in hand.

The pinging spot returned to the middle of her phone once she opened the door. But she'd notice that it started pinging faster as she went down the hall.

The pinging led her only slightly round-about toward the side door. A door which appeared to be propped open, no less.

Outside the door, just a few feet to the side, was a bouquet of roses carefully hung on the side of the building.

Haley approached the roses cautiously, glancing them over before grabbing them and taking them off the wall.

And as the door closed behind her, she'd have maybe a couple footsteps as warning (if she were that aware of the surroundings) before an arm suddenly scooped her around the waist. "A ha! First test, and the Girlfriend Trap is a success!" Cal joked as he gave her a backwards hug.

Cal gave her a little squeeze before he let her go so she could turn around. "Thought I might have to call this off when you almost started crying, though," he admitted. "Are you all right,babe?" He sounded concerned, and more than a little guilty. Also, as non-crazy as she'd heard him in at least a long time.

And this is definitely not the most successful way to take someone on a surprise date, Cal thought as he hugged her, letting her cry. "It's all right... I'm sorry, babe..."

After she'd cried herself out, she took a shuddering breath, and looked down at the floor bashfully.

"I...I'm sorry. This was really sweet of you. I'm just kind of a mess the past few days..." She sniffled.

"Hey, it's okay, babe," he said. "I mean... I know I sure as hell couldn't have been helping the matter." He started debating if he should ask or not. On one hand, she might just want to forget it all, on the other... she looked like she'd been stewing forever now.

Haley sniffled again, wiping her face. "I really love the flowers...they're beautiful," she smiled wearily.

He smiled a little, looking her over. "Y'know, I was going to take you into town for dinner, but if you want we can just stay in tonight."

Cal smiled, maybe a little hopefully. "All right, whatever you want. I figure that there has to be somewhere that we can find a good steak here, right?"

"Maybe. *maybe*," she smirked. "You're talking to a Texan here. We're spoiled by all our good meat."

She cleared her throat and looked at herself in her now darkened phone screen. "I look like shit. I'd need to go get ready if we are going out."

There was a sound of the shower running in the background and Haley stepped into frame, fully clothed. She waved a bit bashfully, chewed her lip a little bit, and then started to pull off her shirt...
