Issue 1 Downtime

Haley sat in her room at her desk, the door slightly ajar, and a box open at her feet. She was presently bent over, carefully examining the armor that Professor Sackville had given her. She ran her hands along it, smiling lightly. Sackville had turned out to be a pretty cool guy after all...

I wonder if I could dig anything up on him with stuff from this armor...

Haley focused intently on the armor. If an old mansion could old onto memories, maybe REALLY old armor could too, right? She closed her eyes.

Oh, there was psychic residue on it. A LOT of psychic residue. Pain, blood, chaos -- and lots of it. This armor had been somewhere bad

The flood of emotions caught her off guard, and she let out a gasp. Still...she tried to focus in, see if she could see any one thing in particular, rather than the entire flood of negative emotions.

She was somewhere...somewhere near a small village, or something like that. It was hard to tell, though -- it was surrounded by dead bodies and a flow of blood, as one group of dark-skinned people charged in, taking no prisoners. Just snippets -- that's all she was getting for now.

She thought she got a glimpse of someone familiar out of the corner of one eye, but everything went by so quickly, and through the haze of such old memories...

Haley strained, slipping out of her chair and kneeling on the floor next to the box, not opening her eyes and pressing her hands firmly against the armor.

Who was that...? Was that Professor Sackville....? She tried to grip that memory tightly, and zero in on the familiar for more than just a glimpse.

Was it? The face was a bit different, the nose not quite right, but if it wasn't him, it would have had to be someone related.

He was...well, he was swinging this massive sword around, blowing on this weird horn thing like crazy. The sword was cleaving through armor left and right, almost as if it wasn't there -- and he turned to look in Haley's directions.

The eyes...the eyes were crazed.

Haley stared at the image of what looked to e her teacher like deer in the headlights. Was the memory interactive? Was she in it? Did he notice her.

He did seem to notice her, though whether or not it was interactive was harder to tell -- he was going left and right, cutting his way forward.

He did not seem to care WHICH side he was cutting up -- there were clearly two different groups of people here, but Roland's sword was cleaving through them all.

Haley gulped nervously but remained frozen in place, fascinated by the scene but terrified at the same time.

In the real world her body was rigid, bent over the box containing the armor, sweat on her brow.

Roland then turned his eyes on her, through a clearing in the battlefield. Not even bothering to wipe the blood off his face as he advanced, he raised his sword and brought it down...

And this would be a good point for the memories to fade.

Haley let out an ear-piercing shriek as she snapped back to reality, scrambling away from the armor and slamming her head into her chair which she'd slipped out of to get closer to the armor earlier, knocking it away.

She fell back against the wall, pulling her knees to her chest, and sobbed, trying to remind herself that it was only a memory, a dream.

After a few moments, there was some shuffling down the hall, then a few soft knocks at the door.

"Haley..? Are you ok?"

The door was partially open, so the knocks just pushed it open further. Haley was sitting on the floor near her desk by the window, her chair pushed aside, a box open and in front of her. Her knees pulled up to her chest, she sat, shaking, and crying quietly.

Tommy made his way in, slowly.

He didn't want to seem like a creep, but he couldn't just pass her by either.

"Are you okay?" He asked, kneeling down beside her a little awkwardly.

"Oh god he killed everyone and then he killed me," she sobbed incoherently.

he slowly brought his hand to her shoulder, rubbing it unfamiliarily.

"In a dream? It happened in a dream?" He asked, inquisitively.

Haley grabbed onto Tommy and buried her face in his shoulder still crying. From his view, her armor was visible.

"It...it felt so real..."

"It's over, it's ok..."

He brought his arms around into a slow, awkward hug, as he glanced at the armor.

"Is that new?" He asked, hoping to get her mind off the nightmare.

"New to me..." she sniffled. "It's Professor Sackville's...and...and...I t-tried to see if I could see some of the memories inside it....ever...everything has like...psychic residue on it from the past... it's like dust.. and so like..you can kinda see stuff... and...and...and he was just there...killing people. Killing everyone. And then he killed me"

She resumed crying as she retold the story, squeezing Tommy.

Tommy continued hugging her, just giving what he could.

"Just.. Yeah.." He said, unsure of what to reassuringly say.

It took awhile for her to settle down.

Eventually, however, she pushed away from him, wiping her face with her hands.

"....sorry... That was...kinda intense.

He started to get up.

"Thanks, Tommy," she sniffled, not getting up quite yet, again hugging her knees to her chest. "You're a really good friend. Thanks for being there even when most of the rest of the school hates me."

He left, and after a few moments, reappeared with two glasses with ice water.

"I hope this is ok.." He said, extending a hand.

"Perfect. Thanks, Tommy," she smiled, now sitting on the edge of her bed, several paces away from the box of armor.

Tommy went to sit next to her, before heading to the Armor.

"Want me to get rid of that?" He asked, happy to move it out of her sight.

"Just close the box and shove it back into my closet, please..." she said looking over at the box warily.

He nodded, quickly closing it up and pushing it as far into her closet as possible. He then returned, taking a seat next to her.
