Kay is sitting at one of the tables, ignoring what's left of her food in favour of doodling in her notepad.

Theresa walked in, shooing a woman in a suit away. "Shoo! Go go go! Babysitter no longer required. I'll be a saint I promise." The woman looked as if she didn't believe that, but she nodded and left. Theresa sighed and went about trying to get her food.

The wide-shouldered boy looked lost and confused as he got into line near Theresa. This was all just way too alien a situation for the poor lad to be his usual self. He was both in awe and, to his embarrassment, frightened by it all. He desperately wanted things the way they had been until mere months ago, and knew they never would be.

He was so lost in thought that he very nearly collided with the girl... and didn't even notice.

"Hey, watch out," Theresa said, somewhat loudly as she steadied a glass of juice unsettled by her own attempt to avoid collision with the larger boy.

Kay glanced up at the commotion for a moment.

Then a moment later she looks up again to make sure she saw that right.

Steve shot out of his stupor.

"S-sorry..." he said with a mild Southern twang, hating how awkward he felt.

"No harm done," she said, inadvertently falling into a twang of her own.

"Resa!" suddenly comes the excited shout from the fish-girl running up to them before she throws her arms around Theresa. "You decided to come afterall!"

He was about to speak more when the fish-girl ran up. He caught himself staring and averted his gaze, staring at the closest food item instead. He would appear suddenly smaller to anyone susceptible to his powers.

"Oof!" Theresa said, managing to set her tray down in time. "Didn't have much choice in the matter. Juvie or Institute. Long story." She stopped and blinked at Steve. "Did you just get smaller?"

His image blinked back to normal size.

"Me?" he asked, briefly confused, "No I... just felt small..."

"Juvie? What did you do? Oh wait, is it because of that registration thing? That sucks... So you still don't wanna be here?" she rattles on, only stopping herself when she notices Steve and his (now again) impressive stature.

"My parents decision to withdraw me, not mine," Theresa said to Kay briefly before turning back to Steve, "My name's Theresa and this is Kay. What's yours?"

"Oh... well... It's still nice to see you again." she says, totally not sounding dejected or anything.

"Hi." she turns around to Steve.

"Steve," he answered with a smile, recovering a little of his usual self, "Sorry about just now, I'm just... really... new to all this."

"Everyone is," Theresa reassured him. "Where are you sittin', Kay?"

"Oh, just over there." she says, pointing over to where she'd been sitting.

"You want to come sit with us, Steve? Kay knows her way around here, she can probably give us both a hand."

"Sure. I think we all got lost the first couple days. And there's this rumor about secret passages too, but no one actually found any."

She shrugs. "That's what I heard. I dunno if it's true. There is a hedge-maze though."

"It's an old house in England. There have to be secret passages."

"I haven't seen any." she says probably a little too seriously.

"So... umm..." he began, scratching the back of his head as they approached the table while carrying his tray one-handed, "What can you two... do?"

"They say I'm some kind of telepath. I don't really hear thoughts as much as see them, so far anyway."

"You... see thoughts?" she asks, sitting down at her tray. Suddenly she looks confused.

"Where's my sketchbook?" she asks, looking around and finally under the table.

He put his tray down and stooped to help her look.

"Is that it?" he asked, pointing.

"I just put it down for, like, a minute!"

But they wouldn't find the sketchbook, which was tucked neatly into Haley's backpack as she walked out of the cafeteria, a mischievous smirk on her face...

After a bit of searching Kay slumps down in her seat, looking devastated. "It's not here anymore. Somebody must have taken it."

"That sucks," Theresa said. "Maybe you can put up one of those 'lost, if found' flyers in the dorm."
