One of Those Moments

Nate was prowling through the hedge, opting to do it on all fours this time. Most of the time he seemed absorbed in investigating various trails left by people attempting the maze previously, though they were mostly cold. Telepaths could pick up some casual contemplation going on in his surface thoughts, but nothing particularly deep or searching. He stopped at one of the intersections, circling it with his nose to the ground.

Teri is wandering through the maze, cheerfully oblivious about trying to find the right way. Spotting the big wolf at the intersection she stops dead in her tracks, unsure about whether that's an actual wolf or a fellow mutant.

His ears twitched and he turned his head to look at Teri, tilting his head sideways as he regarded her. It was almost as if he was waiting to see her reaction.

Teri mimics the head movement, then she bends her knees and extends her hand. "Hi there." she says carefully.

The wolf made a noise that sounded suspiciously like "Hello" as it trotted over to sniff the outstretched hand.

"You're not a normal wolf, are you?" she asks, not wanting to offend. She still pats his head though because doggie! Even if it's a rather rugged and feral looking one.

Nate made a negative noise while at the same time leaning into the pats as the wolf brain took over for a minute.

"We won't call you a good doggie then." she says cheerfully and scratches Nate behind the ears.

A look of absolute bliss crossed Nate's face as she scratched behind his ears.

Nate made the negative sound again, backing away for a bit and holding up a paw.

"Not? Then... Oh! We're so sorry!" she says, standing up.

Nate shook his head and shifted into his half-form, the change rippling down his body like wind through his fur. "Nothing to be sorry about," he said, stretching his jaws and his legs.

"If you say so, sir." she says, suddenly being much more polite.

"If you'd prefer I can shift back down and you can go back to scratching my ears," he said with a chuckle, "But seriously, if I minded being treated like a dog, I wouldn't roam around as one."

"That's good! Though you look more like a wolf really."

"Well, that's what I am, but most people treat me like a dog, since that's what they're used to," he said, sitting up and flexing his hands.

"We've met a few wolves when we lived by ourselves. They're usually not as nice. Not that they're mean, they just don't really care about us."

"Not much reason to unless they're hungry. Safer to avoid humans," he said. After a moment's consideration, he added, "You must be Teri Napliotis."

"You're still human, just with some extra stuff," Nate said. "I know it doesn't feel like it though."

"Feels like it depends a lot on who you are around."

"Truth isn't relative. People get truth and opinion confused sometimes. You're as human as anyone else, even though your abilities give you an edge others don't have. Just because a scientist is brilliant or an athlete excels at a sport, it doesn't mean they're not human. Same thing."

"Oh no no no, it's not about how we're treated. It's about how much time we spend as a human. Don't you feel more like a wolf when you are one?"

"Yes and no. Some instincts are stronger than others, but I've had a lot of practice with controlling them. It's a peculiar problem for those of use who change shapes. Self-identity is very important."

"Quite a few necessary things in life are hard work. I know that's trite, but there's really no better way to put it."

"I worked with someone who has a hard time walking some days. One of my sisters had a hard time not setting her bed sheets on fire. Everyone has challenges."

"I'm not trying to belittle whatever issues you have, just trying to point at that they don't mean you aren't human." He smiled.

"Somewhere deep down inside, you probably still are, it just gets covered up by the instincts. Speaking from experience here," he said with a toothy grin.

She shakes her head. "We just get stupid. Kind of when we split up, but then we're still there, only in two places and... slower."

"Knowing Sam, she wants you to be safe first and foremost, happy a close second. And, unless something's changed drastically, she'll just expect you to do your best and try your hardest. Which really isn't too much to expect."
