[Issue 11] Fish and Fowl

Postby Narrator » Wed Nov 28, 2012 4:00 pm

Sunlight filtered through the fog and warmed Chloe's feathers. A faint rumble sounded from her stomach, and she heard the sound of the creek nearby.

Chloe got up and stretched. She was hungry, and a bit thirsty, and her inability to shift human was a bit irking. She decided she'd feel better after a drink, and headed towards the creek. Once she reached the creek, she bent her head and, hoping she didn't get some nasty water-borne illness, started to drink.

When Chloe reaches the creek she'd spot a shape rushing around under the water. After a moment the shape comes up and turns into Kay just before she bursts through the surface.

"Morning!"

Chloe jumped back, startled. When she saw it was Kay, she raised a fore-limb and waved hello.

And to Kay, Chloe seemed... somehow bigger. Fiercer.

Chloe attempted to shrug, wishing, yet again, that she could talk in this shape, and then jerked her head downstream, indicating that they should go that direction.

Chloe nodded in agreement, and headed off down the creek, moving at the fastest pace she could maintain, since Kay could keep up with her quite easily.

A shadow passed overhead, leaving a breeze in its wake.

"What was that?" Kay asks nervously, looking up at the sky.

Chloe looked up, sniffing the air to see if she could smell what it was.

It smelled vaguely avian, and indeed before long it did another pass, the shadow passing above, long wings spread out from it.

For now, whatever it was didn't descend.

One thing was obvious, though.

It was following them.

Chloe kept moving, now looking for the densest stand of trees she could find.

Kay follows along in the water, always ready to dive underwater at the smallest sign of danger.

That presented a bit of a problem. There was a fairly thick copse of trees within view, but that would take them away from the creek.

Chloe snorted in annoyance, and decided that she'd just keep going until she could find cover that wouldn't force her to abandon Kay, or take Kay out of the water. Or until she got attacked.

And that was when another flying creature's shadow started approaching quite a bit more rapidly than the lazy gliding that had been following them. This seemed to deter the first flyer, which peeled off from its pursuit.

Chloe, who'd been watching the sky, kept going, hoping that this next flyer wasn't going to attack.

Ryan watched Vulture warily, rather confused about all this, coming in for a landing near where he could 'see' Kay, his eyes fixed on Chloe.

Kay ducks under the surface a bit. Now she can't really see the sky much better but it makes her feel a little safer.

Chloe stood still, her feathers puffing up and her eyes on Ryan. She didn't want to attack him, ok, to be totally honest, she did want to attack him, but she wouldn't. Unless he attacked first. Because she had to protect herself, had to protect Kay. And not even slightly because she hadn't had breakfast.

Ryan straightened up, visibly relaxing. "Can you shift back?" he asked. "This stuff's got my powers in overdrive, can't imagine what it's doing to everyone else."

Ryan gave a few flaps and hopped over the river, landing next to her and motioning her to come closer. "Now just don't freak out. THis might make you black out for a second, but it'll only be for a second. And I'll make sure nothing happens to you, okay?"

Ryan reached out and touched her head. He looked at her life energy... then disrupted where he judged the shifting centers were. He'd been trained for anti-shapeshifting tactics, but everyone was different. At the very least, this wouldn't hurt her.

Chloe dropped to the ground. She got up, a moment later, and was human shaped. More or less. Her fingers and toes ended in sharp claws, and she still had feathers on her head instead of hair. She smiled, revealing a mouth full of sharp teeth "Thanks." she said "That feels better."

Kay slowly pokes her head out of the water. "You're back to... normal?" she says, her enthusiasm dwindling a bit when she notices the remaining claws and feathers.
