Empathic telepathy and telekinesis – Michael’s telepathic powers are linked to human emotions. Thus, he can easily manipulate emotions, as well as project and read surface thoughts. He also has access to any emotionally charged memory a person has, and can analyze and manipulate their subconscious reactions to any given situation or stimulus. Michael can also draw upon his emotions or those of others to amplify his psychic abilities. His telekinesis can also be amplified by emotion, allowing him to affect a truly frightening control over matter.
Personality:
Michael is generally easygoing and friendly, the nature of his power making him prone to feeling pushed to action when anyone is in danger/troubled/frightened.
Background:
Michael attended Xavier's with the other New Mutants team, serving as one of the team's (many) psychic backups. He took on a self-appointed role as the team's moral support, though his temper took him invariably to the front lines when hostilities came down. He briefly considered changing his codename at one point, but kept 'Empath' solely to piss off the Hellion of the same name.
When the New Mutants split with the mansion after Magneto's departure, Mike stayed with his teammates under the leadership of Cable. He was a long-standing member of X-Force, moving on to X-Corp afterward, initially based in Paris, but moving to San Francisco after a rather bad breakup with Siryn. Eventually he took up an instructing position at Xavier's along with some old teammates.
Since the passing of the MRA, he's been keeping close contact with Xavier's, and took a leave of absence to help evacuate American mutants to Canada (or wherever else he could manage).
